VW could build 50 million EVs

According to Reuters, Volkswagen might build up to 50 million electric cars on its new electric vehicle (EV) platform and is hinting at increasing its manufacturing in the United States, chief executive Herbert Diess stated to Automotive News.
‘We set up the plant in Chattanooga always with the idea to be able to grow it, to mirror it,’ Herbert commented.
Herbert has stated that the current Chattanooga plant is not larger enough and that the company is still considering multiple options as to its function and expansion.
The CEO also added that Volkswagen and Ford are looking to grow its cooperation, with a highlight on commercial vehicles, ‘What we’re talking about is sharing a few platforms and manufacturing sites there, which makes sense. And within the dialogue, we are also touching other options, but this will be the main focus if we come to a conclusion.’
Herbert continued that the way to increase economies of scale would be to consider the idea of opening up the VW MEB electric car platform licensing to third part manufacturers.
Starting in 2020, VW would be able to build 50 million EVs across its brands worldwide and already have had battery sourcing agreements for them, claimed Herbert.
