Ford to close Wales plant

Ford will close its manufacturing plant in Bridgend, South Wales in September next year, casting huge question marks over the workforce of about 1,700.

This is according to union sources, who have been meeting Ford chiefs this morning.

The BBC has reported the company has blamed ‘under utilisation’ for the decision.

In 2015 Bridgend won a contract to manufacture 250,000 Dragon engines per year. That number was halved a year later, and just weeks ago Ford said it was cutting 7,000 people from its global workforce in order to save costs.

An official announcement is expected later.
