Honda is planning to close its Swindon plant in 2021 after a three-month consultation process failed to find ‘viable alternatives’. The manufacturer will now discuss redundancy packages with the 3,500 workers.
Honda UK director Jason Smith said, ‘We understand the impact this decision has on our associates, suppliers and the wider community. We are committed to continuing to support them throughout the next phases of the consultation process.’
Honda says the decision has nothing to do with Brexit, but is the result of global shifts in the car industry and its need to launch electric vehicles.
Honda announced in February it would cease production of the 160,000 Civics produced at the plant each year.
