EV prototype testing in India

Suzuki will begin testing the early models of electric vehicles (EVs) in India by October 2018, according to Reuters.
Osamu Suzuki commented at the Global Mobility Summit at New Delhi, ‘We will start road-running tests using a fleet of 50 EV prototype vehicles in India from next month in order to develop safe and easy-to-use EVs for Indian customers.’
Suzuki, in partnership with Toyota, has plans to launch EVs in India, but believes that the charging infrastructure will have to change in order for EVs to gain popularity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set targets to electrify all new vehicles by 2030.
EVs come at an expensive cost because of its batteries, which are currently not being manufactured in India. Many manufacturers believe the lack of infrastructure could make Toyota and Suzuki’s plans impractical.
To help aid in the proposition, Maruti Suzuki Ltd would start lithium-ion battery production by 2020 at a plant in India.
