Mitsubishi, Nissan and Renault will join forces in an effort to bring the prices of electric cars down to gas car levels.
The Nikkei newspaper has reported that three car manufacturers will combine their electric vehicle platforms.
Renault and Nissan have long been advocates of zero-emission technology but have struggled to keep costs down with their separate projects. It’s predicted that by sharing key components such as motor, inverter and battery, prices could be substantially reduced, with Nissan’s Leaf coming down by about a fifth.
This strategy has been announced after Toyota and Volkswagen said they are also aiming to mass-produce battery electric vehicles amid tightening emissions and fuel-economy regulations around the world.
