IAV to plead guilty

According to the U.S. Justice Department, IAV has agreed to plead guilty and pay a $35m fine for collaborating to assist Volkswagen in its attempt to avoid U.S. diesel emissions standards, stated Reuters.

50% owned by VW, IAV will be under probation for two years and surveillance by an independent monitor. This is not VW’s first run in with the Justice Department. Already, the company has had to pay over $25bn in America, owing to claims from auto dealers, vehicle owners, states and environmental regulators.

Assistant administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Susan Bodine said that ‘IAV designed the software that allowed VW to cheat U.S. air emissions standards.’

The Justice Department said it would have sought a higher fine but it could have jeopardized IAV’s viability.

IAV is set to plead guilty on 18 January in Detroit, Michigan.
